【Agent

【Vibe Deployment:

【Usage-based Billing:SaaS

English

Emily Leigh-Howard leads AI products at Stripe. This is the most comprehensive conversation to date on how payment infrastructure must change when agents become economic actors.

Agent identity is the foundation: Stripe extended Link (one-click checkout) to work with agent permissions. Consumers set fine-grained guardrails — spend limits, trusted merchants, category restrictions. The agent never sees underlying credentials; each transaction is scored in real time by Stripe Radar (which now looks at 2% of global GDP).

Vibe deployment as the new bottleneck: coding is basically solved (agent traffic to Stripe docs grew 10x+, now 40% of all docs traffic; Stripe CLI is now 70% agent-driven). But deploying still requires manually creating accounts. Stripe Projects lets agents sign up for and configure all needed services from CLI — 16+ partners including Vercel, Supabase, Cloudflare, Twilio, Clerk.

Token theft — the most underdiscussed AI topic: three major fraud patterns. (1) Multi-account abuse: >1 in 6 signups at AI companies are bad actors harvesting new-user credits. (2) Free trial abuse: spin up trials with disposable cards, drain credits, never convert — doubled on Stripe in 6 months. (3) Token dine-and-dash: rack up thousands in usage, billed at month-end, never pay. Resale: steal tokens, mass-generate music, upload to Spotify, collect royalties.

Usage-based billing as existential: SaaS near-zero marginal cost breaks with AI. Hybrid model emerging: freemium threshold, then fixed subscription, then usage-based above. Lovable and ElevenLabs both evolved this way. Agents at machine speed demand real-time metering (Metronome) + real-time billing (Tempo blockchain streaming in stables).

AI startup ecosystem: Stripe business formation doubled. Atlas 2026 cohort tracking to 5x revenue of 2025 cohort. Emergent Labs (founded 2024): 70% international revenue, 16 countries.

12-month vision: agents as multifaceted economic actors — buying, selling, provisioning, running businesses end to end. Stripe Directory (public preview) for agent provider discovery. Ultimate end state: a solo agent running a complete micro-firm.

Emily: We now look across just about 2% of global GDP. In the context of AI, basically all AI buyers and all AI sellers are on Link and on Stripe.

Emily: Agent traffic to Stripe's documentation grew more than 10x. Agent traffic is now about 40% of all our docs traffic.

Emily: Our CLI — 70% of its API resource requests are from agents. The majority of entities using our CLI today aren't people.

Emily: Vibe Coding was easy. Vibe deployment has become the binding constraint.

Emily: Fraudsters have figured out that in AI, you don't need to steal money or credentials. You can just steal tokens.

Emily: More than one in six signups at AI companies are this kind of abuse.

Emily: The pace of new businesses launching has doubled since we talked last year. Atlas startups from the 2026 cohort are tracking to five times the revenue.

Emily: I think we'll start to see agents that are multifaceted economic actors — buying, selling, provisioning infrastructure, running businesses.
