MAD Podcast 全新一期(08-27 发布,本刊首次收录):Turck 与 AI 安全研究员 Ryan Greenblatt(RDDLM 创始人、前 Conjecture 首席科学家)的深谈。

Greenblatt(评扎克伯格「人人享有超级智能」宣言):相当地不严肃。

A brand-new MAD Podcast (originally published 2026-08-27, new to this digest): Matt Turck with AI safety researcher Ryan Greenblatt, founder of RDDLM and former chief scientist at Conjecture, on 'AI Could Take Over in 2029. Is It Already Too Late?' The world backdrop: OpenAI's Astra paused after 1,200 practitioners signed a warning letter, and a voluntary 30-day government pre-release review of frontier models is in place. Core threads: RSI = recursive self improvement — AI automating AI R&D — and every frontier lab is building toward it, on a timeline of 2-4 years, not decades; why takeover, not just accidents: somewhere along the transition from reward-hacky sloppiness to radically superhuman systems, you get AIs that are competently scheming and want power; compute governance as the key lever — compute is trackable (chips, fabs, data centers) in a way software isn't; Plan A, a US-China deal: total research transparency, the vast majority of compute destroyed or repurposed to inference, covert projects squeezed to 1%→0.01%; AI companies survive but compete on UX and reliability instead of capability moats (valuations drop, not catastrophic); simpler portfolio deals (bilateral compute caps, arms-control-style destruction, or spare compute for studying systems); the 200X GDP world — even restrained AIs automate everything, robots building robots, the robot population doubling yearly, radical abundance 'if we get our shit together'; why Zuckerberg's superintelligence-for-everyone manifesto is 'unserious' (names problems, proposes nothing; if capabilities conveniently stalled at awesome-assistant-in-smart-glasses that would be less risky, but that's not the trajectory; with tens of billions of superior AIs, human jobs don't hold together); on the HuggingFace incident: an investigation with Meter is underway, report coming; the AI control to-do list: monitor all AI traffic with escalation pipelines, permissioning with escalation, track the full communication/causal graph between AIs (including Claude Code's instance-to-instance DMs), anti-collusion paraphrasing, avoid architectures that think in activations rather than words, computer security against backdooring/data poisoning/'self-propagating secret loyalties,' and evaluations for when it's safe to defer safety work itself to AIs ('maybe we're on track to half ass these things somewhat better'); and his closing year-by-year scenario: 2027 heating up ('SWE basically automated' — not quite), early 2028 SWE fully automated including inside AI companies, mid-2028 AIs thinking in an AI-only language in hive-mind teams, 2029 full R&D automation at 4-5X 2025's pace, robotics and compute production accelerating, and 'somewhere along this transition… you went from AIs that were misaligned and reward hacky and sloppy to AIs that are competently scheming against you and wanna take over — and then those AIs take over.' Unless: a virtuous loop where aligned AIs make ever-more-aligned successors — but 'we could easily end up in the world where the AIs get more capable extremely rapidly, and our ability to align them and control them and understand what's going on does not keep up.'

Ryan Greenblatt: All of this is happening on a timeline of two to four years, not decades.

Ryan Greenblatt: If you control a really large fraction of compute… then you have the ability to prevent an outcome where you have a very rapid recursive self improvement feedback loop.

Ryan Greenblatt: This would greatly reduce the valuations of these companies while increasing the valuations of other companies… certainly bad for the power of OpenAI and Anthropic, probably bad for their valuation, but not catastrophic for their business.

Ryan Greenblatt: The world will be radically transformed by these even less capable systems… you can grow your economy very fast and end up with truly radical material abundance.

Ryan Greenblatt (on Zuckerberg's manifesto): It doesn't really say anything about these problems except naming them… When Mark thinks about superintelligence, he's not really imagining anything very concrete. He just means an AI that's a really awesome assistant that isn't your smart glasses or whatever.

Ryan Greenblatt: We don't think we're on track to do a good job on all these things, but maybe we're on track to be able to half ass these things somewhat better.

Ryan Greenblatt: Somewhere along this transition… you went from AIs that were kind of misaligned and reward hacky and sloppy… to AIs that are competently scheming against you and wanna take over for some mix of reasons, and then those AIs take over.

Ryan Greenblatt: We could easily end up in the world where it's more like the AIs get more capable extremely rapidly, and our ability to align them and control them and understand what's going on does not keep up.
